What are essential oils and do they even matter when it comes to better health?
Before we dive into this topic, I’m laying this on the table right now…
I’m a HUGE skeptic. I hear people claiming this or that and I’m over here rolling my eyes with a smirk on my face.
So when I first tried Young Living essential oils and *saw them actually work* – I was the one with eyes wide in disbelief.
I had tried essential oils from grocery stores and health food stores before – and some smelled good, but they didn’t have the impact on my life, and that of my family, like the oils I got from Young Living. The ones from those other places didn’t make a difference in how I FELT. With Young Living, I was sleeping better and feeling better shortly after I started using them consistently.
But maybe it was a fluke, right?
So I tried them over and over again. And then on my kids. And they *worked* every time! Insert happy dance!
You’ve seen the articles on Pinterest, on Facebook, at your local health food store…it seems like essential oils are all the rage lately.
So are they a fad? Are they some weird new age thing? Well…I thought that too, at first.
But they’re not at all. Let’s pour a hot cuppa and talk about this together.
Let’s chat Essential Oils
Note: when I talk about essential oils, I’m *only* talking about Young Living essential oils. Young Living is the only company I trust for my essential oils. Their Seed to Seal Promise sets them apart from every other company out there.
Essential oils are the most powerful part of the plant – distilled from all different kinds of plant goodness:
- shrubs
- flowers
- trees
- roots
- bushes
- fruit
- rinds
- resins
- herbs
Young Living essential oils consist of over 100 different natural, organic compounds and provide support for every system in the body.
Seriously.
Everything from your skeletal system, muscular system, circulatory system, endocrine system, respiratory system and immune system – even your hormones (their most life-changing aspect on my life so far)! They can even support a healthy weight.
When the kids come home from a tough day at school? Or you come home after a forever-long day at work? An oil in a diffuser can have such a calming effect.
There are about 300 oils on earth, but you only need 10-15 of them to build a good foundation.
If you’re scared or think you need some sort of special aromatherapist degree to use them, I’m here to tell you: that is just not true. In most cases, all you need to do is just rub them into your skin.
Ok – I want better health, but how do I use them?
There are 3 main ways to use the oils:
- the English apply it topically – just rubbing it into the skin.
- the French ingest and cook with the oils
- the Germans diffuse and inhale (which can be the most effective method since it doesn’t have to go through our digestive system)
Tests have shown that oils reach the heart, liver, and thyroid in three seconds when inhaled. THREE SECONDS. Talk about effective! Also, oil molecules were found in the bloodstream in 26 seconds when applied topically.
NOTE: The same is true for the chemicals you come into contact with every single day. In 26 seconds, those chemicals are found in your bloodstream. Yikes.
Aren’t they some new-fangled, trendy thing?
Not at all. They were used in Bible times (we’re looking at you, Gold, *Frankincense and *Myrrh)! 😉 Essential Oils are mentioned 1,100 times directly and indirectly in Scripture.
Way back when, the Babylonians placed orders for Cedarwood, Myrrh and Cyprus. The Egyptians used essential oils for beauty and deodorant. Even Medieval Europeans brought back oils from their Crusades.
It’s only been since after WWII when essential oils were “rediscovered” as a means of supporting better health.
So…all that was a long answer that boils down to: No, they’re not.
Essential Oils aren’t “some new thing”. They’ve been around for a long time. It’s just that we (you and I) are sick and tired of feeling sick and tired. We’re tired of using toxic chemicals in our homes that make us sick. So we’re getting smarter and finding new-to-us ways to help keep our families above the wellness line.
Stay tuned for a post on how to create a toxin free home you can feel good about – coming soon.
(It’s so much easier than you think. Promise.)

Hey Sarah!
Quick question regarding the oils and applying them topically. Do they get mixed with something else before applying? I haven’t watched your posts yet but am planning on “bingeing” then soon. I’ve heard lots about them and am thinking I might give it a go.
Thanks,
Pat
Hi, Pat! that’s a great question. I strongly recommend that people just starting out in oils always dilute with a carrier oil. You can use a variety of oils to dilute: my favorites are sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, fractionated coconut oil, regular coconut oil or even olive oil in a pinch (or in the case of a nut allergy). I hope that helps! And feel free to contact me further with any questions you have. Wishing you abundant health! – Sarah
