“They” say: “Purchase THIS cute and easy organizer set for only $65 and all your clutter will magically go away!”
I say: “No, thanks – I’ve got better things to spend my money on”. 😉
How about we upcycle a couple things we already have on hand for little organizers that WE like and fit OUR style? Now you’re talkin’.
While I’m a huge proponent of, “If you don’t love it, get rid of it”, and the “Less is more” approach, there are still so many thing we have to keep on hand that we use every day. But sometimes things get left hanging out on the counters or shoved into a drawer – where they immediately get lost in the shuffle.
A little over a year ago, I went to a class put on by my sweet friend Jackie, from Farmhouse in the City 1890, who owns my most favorite shop ever in the whole wide world. In her class, she shared with us how to take an ordinary tin can and turn it into something really pretty in which to store all kinds of things.
While I’ve admittedly changed the process ever so slightly by using tape instead of mod podge, the idea is the same. So simple, so pretty and completely customizable.
This could be one of those, “Why didn’t I think of that?” moments for you. I know it was for me.

Easy Organizer Supplies
- Old tin can of any size and shape
- heavy weight paper in a pattern or design that you love
Told you this was going to be easy. 😉
Lay out your decorative paper (even a pretty gift bag that you’re no longer using works).
Measure the height of your can (add a little extra at the top) and mark that measurement on your paper. Use a ruler to make a straight line on the paper to guide your cut.
Cut along the line until you have enough to wrap around the circumference of your can.
Wrap the paper strip around your can and tape into place.
You could also use double-sided tape if you don’t want to see the tape. I don’t bother because I just turn the tape edge to where it’s not visible.
Now, either fold or make small slits around the top of the paper where it’s rising above the can. (Here you can see I just folded this down). Tape the inside if needed and Voila!
In a matter of minutes, and for just a few pennies, (or maybe nothing, if you already had pretty paper on hand) you have this super easy organizer – a cute place to store pens, pencils…
makeup brushes, crayons, craft supplies…
or a fun way to display silverware for a party. 🙂
I’ve even placed a small plain vase inside the can for a pretty flower display.
The options really are endless and you can make it to fit your style; your home.
So regardless of what “they” say you should be using (and spending the big bucks on) to organize your home – WE -you and I- know we can DIY our own organization that’s so much better; so much cuter; so much CHEAPER than what “they” say you should be buying. DIY wins again. 😉
