What’s the easiest way to start a fire? You just want a fun little bonfire for s’mores and hotdogs, buuuut….it can be a little intimidating, am I right?
If the thought of starting a fire on your own kind of makes you nervous because you don’t want to deal with the crazy-flammable liquids or the finger-burning lighters, then I’ve got just the thing. After reading this post, you’ll no longer have to worry about dealing with any of that. AND I’m sharing with you a favorite new family “thing” here at 1915 House – brunch over the fire pit! (or bonfire/campfire/what-have-you)
You did see our DIY fire pit here, yes? We had it DONE – start to finish – in under two hours. Such a quick project!

How to Start a Fire
We wanted to really give this HomeRight ElectroLight Fire Starter a true test. Charcoal is awesome and those special fire starter packs are so easy, but would it light random scrap wood, sticks, twigs from around our yard? What if they were a little damp? We were going to see what it could do.
The boys ran around the yard and gathered up all kinds of fire fodder while I gathered the goodies for our bonfire brunch.
I pre-made a few breakfast burritos – just layering cooked scrambled eggs, sausage (0r bacon) and cheddar into tortillas – and rolled them up in aluminum foil. Of course, a couple of the guys wanted “legit” breakfast sandwiches, too, so I prepped a quick tray of goodies so they could customize to their heart’s content. Easy peasy.
Once we had our fire laid, we grabbed our ElectroLight Fire Starter and gave it a go. Check out the video below! (And if you like, give us a thumbs up and subscribe to our YouTube channel – we’re just getting it up and running and learning along the way. It’ll only get better from here, I promise.) 😉
We couldn’t even believe how quickly it started the fire! We were fully expecting it to take a couple minutes…but it was so fast!
We. Were. SOLD. Even my not-easily-impressed Mr. 1915 was impressed with it. [clickToTweet tweet=”Start a fire in *under 2 minutes* – no flammable chemicals – with this brilliant tool. Check it out!” quote=”Being able to start a fire in under a minute without using flammable chemicals is pretty fantastic!”]
The boys had fun feeding the fire for a little bit while we waited for the flames to die back a little.
Let’s talk about this custom fire pit grill grate for a minute, shall we?
We knew we’d want to cook over our fire pit, even though we have a grill. Let’s be honest, cooking over an open fire is just so fun. Not to mention it MAKES you slow down – and we all need a little more of that, don’t we. 😉
We purchased a large grill grate and then Mr. 1915 got two, three foot metal rods, 3/8″ in diameter, and four stainless steel hose clamps and just clipped the rods to the grill grate! He’s so smart. I would have complicated that in so many ways. :p
Brunch over the Fire
Once the flames went down a little, and we had a good bed of coals, it was time to cook! We threw the aluminum-foil-wrapped breakfast burritos on, along with some sausage patties (buy the pre-cooked ones to make it easy on yourself) and a few english muffins.
Nothing took very long to cook and before we knew it, everyone was eating and the boys declared it “the funnest breakfast ever”!! Mission accomplished. 😉
Yes, it’s fun to roast hot dogs and s’mores over a fire – but breakfast? YES!!
*Momma Secret: Pssst…I have to tell you this…other than a little prep, this is virtually a hands-off meal for you. The family is having so much fun cooking and creating their own breakfast combinations, all you have to do is sit back and sip your coffee. Watching them laugh and giggle and exclaim over how much fun they’re having is TOTALLY worth the few minutes it took to throw together some burritos and a breakfast sandwich platter.
Who knows? They’ll have so much fun cooking over the fire, I bet they’ll even make you YOUR breakfast! It’s the little things… 😉
So whether you’ve already got mad fire-making skills or you’re just learning to start a fire, this handy little tool is a fast, safe way to get it going. No more chemicals, no more scorched fingers – just a cheerfully crackling bonfire, ready for all your favorite goodies. Before you know it, your family will be gathered around, laughing, telling stories and making “the best food ever!” 🙂
And if you’re feeling particularly adventurous (or you just really want some KILLER biscuits) – you’ll want to check these out. Buttery, melt in your mouth biscuits that will have your family begging for more.
Raising my coffee mug to you…
