A simplified, neutral Christmas is just what my family needed this year. The simplicity soothes and quiets our home and hearts…join us here, won’t you?
If you, like me, are finding yourself standing in the doorway of the holiday season a little frazzled, a little overwhelmed and feeling very much like you just can’t live up to the expectations, I’d like to encourage you to lay it all down.
Free yourself from any perceived expectations and let the “shoulds” fall away. No one needs that added stress this year. Instead, let’s make our focus on the things that we really, deep down, want to focus on anyway.
Time together with those we love.
Reaching out to others.
So if the idea of “going all out” makes you feel tired before you even begin, maybe that’s a still, small voice telling you it’s time to let go.
*PLEASE NOTE: now, if decorating to the hilt is totally your jam, then sisterfriend, *go for it*!! I’ll be cheering you on! 🙂 This is all about doing what makes *your* heart sing. Whether that’s “simplicity to the core” or “over the top decadence”. You do you. Either way, I trust you’ll find encouragement for your own home this season right here…
Come Home for Christmas Home Tour
Before I go any further, I’m so excited to tell you that this post is part of a Come Home for Christmas Tour hosted by the sweet Vicki and Jenn from over at Two Bees in a Pod. They’ve graciously coordinated all these room tours, one for each area of our homes, which means you’ll have tons of inspiration at your fingertips. *happy dance* Be sure to check out all the lovely ideas and gorgeous spaces! A Neutral Christmas, Simplified
I thought my mostly neutral Christmas decor from last year was pretty simple…until I went to pull out All the Things for this year and most of it made me go…”Nope. Too much.” So this year is even simpler. My home already feels more calm, more peaceful for it.
First of all, full disclaimer…(ahem) did you see how I painted a Christmas tree *right smack dab* in the middle of my living room a couple weeks ago? Well, I loved how it turned out so much, I painted two more trees. Including this one. I love the frosted look of it…
Side note: this pic makes me wanna curl up underneath that blanket with a good book and a hot cuppa. But I digress…
I can almost hear you already…”I thought you said you kept things simpler this year?!” 😉
But I did.
While I still have several trees, I am putting nothing on them, other than white “Twinkle lights”, as my 4 year old calls them. 🙂 The only exception is the tree in the boys’ room on the third floor. They have been given free reign to decorate that one however their little hearts desire.
Use Only What You Love
While I really wanted a beautiful, new, winter-themed botanical print, my printer decided to give me fits and so I resorted to using a print I already had and love. The simplicity of it makes my heart smile.
Let’s chat about the mantel for a minute, too. Almost everything here I found from shopping the house – the only exception being the sprigs in the ironstone.
The books, candles, candlesticks and greenery were all things I already had on hand. And these frames? They had not-so-cute prints in them, so I freed them from their less-than-amazing prints and decided to feature the frames as they were. The wood grain on the oval one makes me swoon and the contrast with the more rustic frame suits nicely. I even like the old hanging wires left on.
White, woods, greenery and candles….it all works together for a neutral Christmas vibe we love.
As you may have noticed, this mantel has a huge mirror which I have carefully covered with white poster board. The mirror is not my favorite so I decided to cover it. I used removable, double-sided tape so when I change my mind (happens often) – it’ll be an easy change back.
So, sweet friend, be encouraged that you DON’T have to go over the top with decorating, if that’s not your jam. (refer back to the above note if it is) 😉
Do what makes YOUR heart sing.
Life’s too short to make your home anything other than what you love. Regardless of what’s trending or in style.
