The changing of seasons often brings an urge for a dining room makeover. Or any room, for that matter. Call it nesting, call it Spring fever. Whatever you call it, paint is our key to big impact on a small budget…
*I am teaming up with some wonderful blogger friends for a Spring Home Tour and I know you’re going to find so much inspiration and eye candy today! If you’re coming over from Laura at The Classic Cottage – Welcome! I know you were inspired by all her beautiful Spring ideas.
I also want to give a huge thank you to Amber from Follow The Yellow Brick Home for hosting this Springtime fun! Thanks, girl!
Welcome! If you’ve followed me for any length of time, you know by now that I change paint colors on my walls almost as often as some women change shoes.
I blame attribute my room-painting-tendencies (especially in mid winter) on my Grandma Harris. My Mom used to tell me that Grandma Harris painted a room in her house every February to chase way the winter blues.
For what it’s worth, I think it’s a great way to defeat the gloom and yuck of long, cold, grey days. 🙂 This year, I decided to paint my dining room – from black…back to white.
The black walls were so super fun and cozy for late Fall/early Winter, but now that Spring is right around the corner, I find myself craving light and bright and fresh. And so of course I reach for my favorite white.

I used my favorite trim brush for all the edging. This brush gives such sharp, clean edges – better than any edger I’ve found (especially for heavily textured walls).
I used the HomeRight PaintStick EZ Twist for rolling the walls – it makes for fast work since the roller actually holds paint IN the handle. You can go to the HomeRight Blog to see the step by step tutorial for how to use the PaintStick.
And to help rid the room of the smell of paint fumes? I always diffuse Purification essential oil – works like magic. You can see the story about my journey to health and essential oils here.
Our Spring dining room makeover
After the painting, I had so much fun bringing in some Spring decor. A bird’s nest here, an egg there. And as always, I try to keep things simple and uncluttered.
Out of the front hall closet, I pulled these two old framed photos. Thy are of my Great Grandma and Great-great grandma. Once my Momma’s, and now mine, I’m happy they have a place in my home again. And I love the domed glass on them.
To the left of the french doors, hangs one of my favorite signs from Down Grace Lane. You can find her on Instagram – her work is gorgeous.
And to the right of the doors, I hung this old “something” that was my Momma’s. She said it used to hang over the back rack of the Women’s Home Companion delivery bicycle. I just hung it over a dowel, tied some jute twine and called it good. I absolutely love it.
And the piano stool? I spent many hours perched there as a child, practicing piano. So many stories, so many memories when you use things from around your home that you love.
So when you’re feeling “blah” about winter, grab a gallon or two of paint and give yourself the gift of a room makeover. It’ll brighten your spirits and help you make it through the last, long months of winter.
My Grandma says so. 🙂

Hi Sarah, I had to go back and see those amazing black walls, and I sure agree those walls are elegant and dramatic. the photo of that chair with the pumpkin is iconic. I also love your wonderful brightening and lightening up with white. I’d want to go back and forth with the seasons. Glad to find your blog and meet you!
Hi, Debra!! Welcome to the blog! I’m so glad you’ve found inspiration and ideas here! I look forward to connecting with you more! 🙂
I love your dining room transformation! The white really brings out all the vintage character of the room, and it really makes all your lovely wood trim pop!
Thank you so much, Michelle! 🙂
It looks amazing! I liked the black but the white is so bright and fresh!
Thank you, sweet friend!! <3
The new color in your dining room looks lovely. It is always nice to brighten things up.
Thank you, Pam! 😀
I really loved those dramatic black walls but I can understand why they would be a bit too much in the spring. Your dining rooms looks fresh and lovely just like a spring day!
Thank you so much, Mary!! <3
What a lovely and cheerful spring filled room! I adore the artwork that features the J.R.R. Tolkien quote. Did you make that?
Thank you, Laura! No, I got it from Down Grace Lane on instagram. 🙂
Your home is so beautiful with all of the stained moldings and they really show with the bright white paint. I love it! My husband used to joke that he’d go to bed and wake up with different colored walls. I don’t do that as much as I used to but I understand your love of paint! 🙂
Ha ha!!! Paint is such an easy way to transform a room, for sure! Fun to “meet” someone else who has my same affinity for paint! 😀 Have a great day!
Gorgeous as always! I loved the black, but the white makes my heart happy and I love it in your dining room!
Thank you, Amber! The white is definitely my fave, too. 😉
Love this idea! The room looks great!
Thank you, Ginny! 🙂

Love it, especially the photos of your Great Grandma and Great Great Grandma! The white walls with the beautiful woodwork and the touches of color in the accent pieces are so inviting. Successful makeover!
