Painting a Refrigerator – wait, what?? 😉 Oh yes….let’s do this!
When we moved into our house, we knew we’d want to replace the appliances – including the refrigerator – eventually. They worked, but they were really outdated – and the refrigerator just couldn’t hold all the food we needed it to hold for our family of six. We lived with it for over six months, not in a huge rush – just keeping our eyes open and occasionally searching local buy/sell sites and Craigslist.
Finding a Refrigerator
When we came across this refrigerator and saw it was the style we were looking for, we made an offer and ended up getting this beauty for a steal of a deal.

How to Paint a Refrigerator
Once we got it home, we took it straight into the garage, knowing it was going to get a coat of white paint. We decided to use an exterior paint for the wood doors and white appliance paint for the sides – which were black at the time. The first coat of appliance paint went on very thinly and the coverage wasn’t amazing. I mentally prepared myself to have to apply 5-6 coats of paint.
I had just painted my first set of kitchen cabinets and they had taken 6 coats of paint. SIX. It’s these kinds of things I want to share with you so you can learn from my mistakes and avoid the hassle altogether. But that’s another post for another time. Back to painting the fridge. 😉
Thankfully, once the fridge was ready for another coat of paint, the second coat coverage was so much better and I realized my initial impressions of the paint were mistaken. It only needed three coats – yay!! And that appliance paint is tough stuff!! Even after moving it into the house, which involved tight doorways and wedging it into place, there were no scratches on the paint and it looked beautiful!
We are very happy with the final result and once I get the cabinets and floors painted (you can see here how *badly* they need updated) I’m going to love our kitchen. (UPDATED: see the updated, completely refreshed kitchen BELOW!)
Honestly? I was REALLY hesitant to show you these pictures now – with all the work that still needs to be done in the room (those ugly floors and dark cabinets bug me) – but you know what? This is life. And these kinds of projects take time. There is no perfection here and I never want someone to think that’s the goal. My goal is to create a home that is welcoming and comfy – and for me, that means sometimes living with the “to-do” lists and the undone…including ugly floors and cabinets. Giving myself space to let my home slowly evolve into what it will be – and not demand that everything be perfect *right now*. This is our life. In all it’s beautiful imperfections.
I hope my pictures of the undone and the “in process” will perhaps give you the nudge to start somewhere in your own home. It really doesn’t have to be perfect – just start on something small and give yourself grace and time to slowly work towards the vision you have for your home. What’s one thing that you’d like to do in your home and what’s holding you back? I’d love to hear your story…
